Therapeutic Volunteer Program (TVP)

Assisting Individuals in Achieving
Greater Independence and Community Integration.

The Therapeutic Volunteer program (TVP) is designed to contribute to the rehabilitation process of people living with a mental illness by giving them the opportunity to actively volunteer within the community. Available at both our clubhouse locations, TVP works to assist individuals in developing personal life and/or pre-employment skills so that they can achieve greater independence and community integration.

TVP provides funds to offset the costs incurred by the individuals participating in the program, such as clothes, food, travel, and other expenses associated with volunteering. Through TVP, we strive to provide our members with the opportunity to:

  • Develop skills, interests, and abilities
  • Have a role in the community
  • Increase their self-identity, self-worth, and confidence
  • Develop readiness to engage in volunteering
  • Build capacity to more fully engage in meaningful programs that support recovery

Volunteer Placement

Volunteer placement is recognized as an integral part of the psychosocial rehabilitation framework. Individuals will be eligible to receive 12 consecutive months of placement, if they have not been on TVP in the last 12 months. A wait list will be created when the number of individuals requesting TVP exceeds the program’s capacity.

In order to be eligible to participate in TVP, you must:

  1. Be an adult with a prolonged psychiatric illness with significant handicaps in vocational, life skills, or other social functioning.
  2. Be ineligible for the Ministry of Employment & Income Assistance and Housing’s Program called “Employment Initiatives for Handicapped Persons”.
  3. Have an approved volunteer placement.
  4. Complete the “Therapeutic Volunteer Program Application Form” and be approved by the Mental Health Clinician.
